About this songbook

What this site is

Ukulele Serenade is a working ukulele songbook: lyric sheets with chord names set above the syllable they land on, four-string chord frames at the head of every sheet, and a strumming strip fixed to the foot of the page. Everything is public-domain traditional material, arranged here so that a group can sing it the same evening.

What we add to the songs

Every arrangement on this site is our own: the chord voicings for a re-entrant ukulele, the strumming pattern, the capo and key advice, and the practice notes under each sheet. Where a tune exists in several traditional versions we say which one we follow and why.

Nothing here is copied from a commercial songbook, and no lyrics from in-copyright songs appear on this site. If a song is still under copyright, we do not publish it.

Languages

Every sheet is published in English and Chinese. The Chinese pages are not machine translations: the lyric lines are singable Chinese renderings made for this site, and the practice notes are written separately in each language.

How the book grows

Sheets are released on a fixed schedule rather than all at once, in the order a group would learn them: two-chord songs first, then waltzes, then the minor-key ballads, with the strumming and tuning pages filling the gaps. A sheet that has been scheduled but not yet released is not linked from anywhere on the site.
